Dermal Filler is a hyaluronic acid based gel that can be used to restore lost volume or add extra volume to the lips.
Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide that is naturally present in skin and cartilage, but as we age we loose this layer. Once injected it can replenish what has been lost and help hydrate the area, restoring or adding volume and definition. Hyaluronic acid is naturally broken down by the body, and usually lasts 6-12 months.

The lips can be treated in a number of ways, often the best treatment combines all aspect of the lips, definition and volume.
Lip treatments are not just aimed at the young who are looking for a fuller pout. As we age, the lips lose volume, flatten and become thin, often elongating the area between your nose and mouth.
Lines also form vertically which allow lip stick to bleed into the area. Fillers can help to smooth away these lines, replacing some of the lost volume and redefining the outline, without the lip looking "done".

As a dentist I am regularly used to administering pain free dental injection. Dental anesthesia can be used to completely anesthetize the lips to provide completely painless treatment.
There are several techniques that can be used to create the perfect lip. One of which is using a cannula. This is a thin blunt ended tube which allows the filler to flow smoothly into the lips which can be achieved via two small holes just to the side of the corners of the mouth. See the circles on the photo below. From these two small holes both top and bottom lips can be filled. This method reduces the risk of bruising and swelling, and also improves the safety of the procedure.
